Background

I was six. Or maybe seven. I was watching TV in the basement. I could hear my mother puttering around in the kitchen upstairs. He came down the stairs. He sat next to me silently. After a while he told me to take off my pants. I did. What did I know? He reached over and grabbed my penis. He then took off his pants and had me play with his penis.

My life changed on that day.  Forever.  Or at least until today. My silence was his permission. I will no longer allow him that control.

The rapes went on, as best I can recall, until I was about 15. Three, four, five days a week. 365 days a year (less the time spent traveling with my father) .  You do the math.

There were punishments as well. And when his friends came around, they made sport out of my pain. Then they gang raped me for good measure.

Every second of every minute of every day of my life since then has been affected by what he did. It changed my perception of myself and my place in the world. His penis impacted my relationships with my family and friends. My relationship with women was forever changed and I will never have children. My sexuality is not mainstream.

I want back what was taken from me.

The following is the Bio that I use on my websites. Following the Bio is my current resume. I have included these so that you will have an idea of who I am and what I have achieved as a sexual abuse survivor.

Brad Rickerby might just as well have been born with a camera in his hand. The son of LIFE staff photographer Arthur Rickerby, Brad Rickerby developed a profound visual aesthetic early on and had his first publication credit in LIFE in 1966 at the age of nine.
Rickerby flirted with the business world in the '80's, earned an MBA (Duke, '89) and worked on Wall Street with the Dreyfus Corporation. But inevitably he was compelled to reject the confines of the corporate world, to return to his creative roots.
Rickerby's re-birth into creativity came in 1991 when he started shooting for the Brooklyn (NY) Phoenix. From there he went on to do paparazzi work for Sipa Press and eventually to news photography as a full time stringer for Reuters based out of New York City.
In 1998, based on his developing Photoimpressionism and City Lights projects, Rickerby signed a contract with Tony Stone (later Stone, still later Getty).
Through distributions by Getty, Reuters, Sipa and most recently Agefotostock, Rickerby's work has been published on six continents and by virtually every major publication in the world. His images have also been widely used by corporations, governments and institutions.
A short list of Rickerby's clients and credits include: LIFE, Time, People, Newsweek, The New York Times, the New Yorker, Vanity Fair, Moosylvania, Random House, Goldman Sachs, Harpo Productions, OgilvyOne Worldwide, Motorola, Samsung, E! Entertainment TV, Le Figaro, AOL France, Stern, Hasbro, Forbes, Paris Match, Microsoft, Dell, the Government of the People's Republic of China, Bank of Boston, Bell South, Cingular, E-Trade, MTV, Vogue, Lonely Planet Guides, ABC Primetime, Hong Kong Times, Singapore Straight Times, Die Aktuel, The London Times, Esquire, Maxim, New York Magazine, Playboy, Playgirl, USA Today, The Washington Post, The Los Angeles Times, GQ, VH1, and on and on and on.
In 2001 Rickerby was nominated for a Pulitzer Prize for his work in New York City on 11 September.
Recently, Rickerby added painting to his repertoire. He works in a variety of media (oil, acrylic, watercolor etc.) matching the media to suit the mood of the image he wants to create. Rickerby's paintings share many similarities to his photography. They all revolve around the aesthetics of abstraction, chaos and tranquility, of color and light and motion.
